TIPS FOR LIVING IN SHENYANG

        All foreigners must register at the local police station as soon as they arrive on campus.

        Not doing so will result in fine, up to 60 days detention or both.

1.        A typical winter in Shenyang is from November to March. Temperature can go down to below -30 degrees. Keep yourself warm and have some thick clothes.

2.        Respect the local cultures.

3.        Do not trust unmarked taxis. They may overcharge you, or even cause danger to your personal safety.

4.        On public transportation, please give up your seat to those who need it (toddlers, pregnant women, elderly).

5.        Watch out for the traffic.

6.        Protect all your documents when you are on public transportation.

7.        Street food vendors are not licensed; therefore, eat at your own risk.

8.        Always keep pocket money in case of emergency.

 

 

WHAT IS IN SHENYANG

Places to See:

l  Mukden Palace (故宫): First built in 1625 for Nurhachi and inherited by his son Abahai, the former imperial Palace of Shenyang is one of two royal complexes that remain in China today.

l  Zhaoling (昭陵): at Beiling Park. This is the tomb of the second Qing emperor, Huang Taiji, and his consorts

l  Fuling(福陵):This is the first tomb of the Qing Dynasty in which Nu’erhachi, the founder of the dynasty, was laid to rest

l  North, East, South and West Pagodas (北塔,南塔,东塔,西塔): The west pagoda is in the courtyard of a temple in the Korean quarter. The other three are surrounded by small parks.

l  Mao Zedong’s Statue (毛泽东塑像): This is the largest statue of Mao Zedong in China. Situated at Zhongshan square.

l  Liaoning Provincial Museum(辽宁省博物馆):A high quality museum featuring Liaoning history from the stone age to the Qing dynasty .

l  9.18 Memorial Museum: at 22:30 on 18th September 1931, a bomb exploded beside the Japanese run railway line near Shenyang. Through instigated by the Japanese, the Chinese were blamed for the event giving the Japanese an excuse to invade and occupy the whole of the northeast of China

l  Shengjing Ancient Cultural Street (盛京古文化街):This street tries to recreate the architectural styles of the Qing Dynasty.

l  Shenyang Horticultural Exposition Garden (中国沈阳世界园艺博览会):This is the site of the 2006 International Horticultural Exposition. One of Shenyang’s main tourist attraction.

l  Shenyang Air Museum (沈飞航空博览园):Beiling airport is the site where China produced its first modern jet aircraft in the early 1950’s.

l  Ice skating: at 兴隆大家庭, MixC mall (万象城)

l  Northeast Asia Ski Resort (东北亚滑雪场): 28 km outside of Shenyang at Magang Xingchengzi District

l  Qipanshan Ice and Snow world (棋盘山冰雪大世界):Ski resort at Qipanshan

WHAT IS AROUND SHENYANG

 

Benxi: Known for its water cave and mountain.

 

Dandong: A beautiful city situated at the confluence of the Yalu River and Yellow Sea in the southeast of Liaoning Peninsula, faces the North Korean town of Sinuiju across the Yalu River. It is surrounded by mountains, rivers and ocean. Good place for your summer vacation.

 

Dalian: The largest port city in North Eastern China, it is also the biggest economy center and most popular tourist destination of North Eastern China. It is known for its beaches, fog, sea food and cleanliness, and hosts annual international events such as marathons, fashion festivals, beer festivals, and seafood festivals.

 

Panjin: A city well known for its red sea and river crabs.

  

HOW TO GET AROUND

 

To JiJia/Vanguard/Subway Station: CMU West/South gate, take the 197 bus until the last stop

 

To Tai-Yuan Jie: CMU West/South gate, take the 197 bus until the last stop. Walk to the subway station and take line 2 to the transfer station (Qing Nian Da Jie), transfer to line 1 bound for Tai Yuan Jie

 

To Zhong Jie :CMU West/South gate, take the 197 bus until the last stop. Walk to the subway station and take line 2 to the transfer station (Qing Nian Da Jie), transfer to line 1 bound for Zhong Jie

 

To Hushitai: police station, go to the West Gate and take the 197 bus across the street. When you see the police station on the right hand side, get off the bus

 

As time goes on, there will be more travel options, because the government is currently expanding the subway lines and bus routes.
