Department Introduction

Division of Biomedical Engineering

Sep 27, 2017 13:02

History

Approved by Ministry of Health, China Medical University and Northeastern University jointly established the first Master’s degree program in Biomedical Engineering in northeastern region of China in 1983. In the same year, the Department of Biomedical Engineering was established, which then started to officially admit postgraduate students. In 1985, the Medical Electronic Research Laboratory was established with the approval of Ministry of Health. The Department of Biomedical Engineering is now affiliated to School of Fundamental Sciences, China Medical University.

Research

The Division has been well-known for its scientific research since its establishment. Led by the older generation of science and technology workers and with 20 years’ dedication of all the staff, the Department of Biomedical Engineering has become a modern collective integrating teaching, scientific research, development and talents training with a certain scale. Over the years, a large number of graduate students in biomedical engineering have been cultivated, who have exerted relatively significant influence in the field in China. At present, the Division has three main research directions: the biomedical signal detection technology research concentrating on biological sensors and biological material component detection technology; the biomedical signal processing technology research including computer signal processing technology, artificial neural network processing technology, computer virtual detection and processing technology, telemedicine and home monitor technology research and development; the medical image processing, the important means for clinical diagnosis and fundamental research, concerning image enhancement and three-dimensional reconstruction technology. In recent years, the Division has engaged in the compilation of many textbooks as chief editors and editors, such as“Medical Imaging Technology”, “Medical Electronic Technology”, “Medical Electronics,Medical Imaging ElectronicsandBiomedical Engineering Experiment Course. In addition, the Department has been subsidized many times by National Natural Science Funds, Ministry of Education Funds, as well as provincial and municipal scientific research funds, and won 4 projects from National Natural Science Funds, 4 projects from Ministry of Health Medical Funds, the first prize once and third-prize twice of provincial Medical Science and Technology Progress. Of more than 100 papers published at home and abroad, 4 papers were indexed by SCI and 5 were indexed by EI.

Faculty

The Division of Biomedical Engineering currently has three departments: Biomedical Engineering Department, Medical Electronic Department and Tissue Engineering Department. Among the 26 faculty members, there are 3 professors, 4 associate professors, 16 lecturers and 3 support staff. 5 of the faculty members are supervisors of graduate students and 2 are doctoral supervisors. More than a hundred postgraduate students have been cultivated and 15 students are currently pursuing a master’s degree. The main research directions of the Division are in the biological sensors, biological materials, medical image processing, research and development of medical device and Tissue Engineering. The founding director of the Division was professor Jiwen Huo, whose successors are professor Xiuzhang Wang and professor Xianzheng Sha. Professor Xianzheng Sha, who graduated from Biomedical Engineering at China Medical University with a master’s degree in 1991, is the current director of the Division as well as the dean of the School of Fundamental Sciences. From July 2000 to February 2002, he focused on the study of implantable glucose sensor at Biological Engineering Department of University of California at San Diego. From October 1994 to July 2000, he worked as associate professor and deputy director of the Division of Biomedical Engineering of China Medical University. From January 2007 to August 2007, he furthered his research on implantable glucose sensor at the Biological Engineering Department of University of California at San Diego as a senior visiting scholar funded by National Overseas Study Fund Committee. From March 2002 to December 2014, he worked as professor and director of Biomedical Engineering Department, director of the Division of Science and Technology, and deputy dean of College of Basic Medicine. Since January 2015, he has served as director of the Division of Biomedical Engineering, dean and deputy secretary of School of Fundamental Sciences of China Medical University.

Specialty Introduction

Specialty Overview:The specialty of biomedical engineering was established in 1983, and with the approval of Ministry of Health and in collaboration with Northeastern University, the first master’s degree program of biomedical engineering in the northeastern region was launched to recruit graduate students. Students pursuing bachelor’s degrees and professional master’s degrees were initially admitted in 2003 and 2014 respectively. Given the complete teaching system, highly qualified faculty and advanced instruments and equipments, the specialty of biomedical engineering has become the pilot specialty for engineering talent training mode reform, the first-class specialty and excellent engineer training base in Liaoning Province. In 2015, it was awarded the five-star specialty in Chinese university rankings by Chinese University Alumni Association.

Training Objectives: To cultivate interdisciplinary talents with all-round development ofmorality, intelligenceandphysique, with the basic knowledge of life science and medicine and theoretical knowledge and development skill in electronics and computer science related to biomedical engineering and tissue engineering, with the capabilities of analyzing and solving problems and carrying out scientific research, technology development, production management and administration in the field of biomedical engineering, and with sound personality and the spirit of innovation and professionalism to apply the advanced technology to practical medical problems.

Main Courses: The main courses include compulsory basic courses , basic medicine, advanced mathematics, linear algebra, probability and statistics, college physics, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, circuit theory, analog circuit, digital circuit, computer composition principles, testing instruments, medical electronic instruments, imaging technology, signal system, digital signal processing, tissue engineering, etc..

Length of Schooling: 4 years.

Graduation and Degree Conferring: Students can graduate after passing all required courses and are conferred a bachelor's degree in engineering upon the completion of their thesis and thesis defense.

Employment: After graduation, the students can further their study at first-class universities or research institutes both at home and abroad, work in medical equipment supervision departments of the government, conduct research and development in medical equipment enterprises, or carry out clinical engineering related work in hospitals. In recent years, the employment rate of the undergraduate students has consistently maintained at 96.29%-100%, high on the list of all undergraduate specialties of the university and also ahead of the same specialty of other colleges and universities in the province.

Students Work

The Student Work Office of the Division of Biomedical Engineering was established in August 2014, currently with 1 senior counselor and 8 tutors. Under the leadership and support of the school, the office has performed excellent jobs in ideological and political education, collective building of the Party, Youth League and class, academic guidance, management of daily affairs, mental health education and counseling, network ideological and political education career planning and employment guidance in the past two years, creating a positive campus environment for education work. Together with the students’ union of Youth League, the office has sponsored a series of activities in arts, sports, scientific research and social practice, which have fully mobilized the enthusiasm of the students and made outstanding contributions to the construction and development of the students work. The office was awarded 2014 “May 4th Red Flag” Youth League, 2014 Outstanding Party Branch of China Medical University, 2015-2016 “May 4th Red Flag” Youth League.
