School of Humanities and Social Sciences

School of Humanities and Social Sciences (School of Marxism) was founded in October 2010. Its predecessor, the Social Science Department, was a subordinate organization of teaching and scientific research in CMU.

We have 46 teachers and staff members now, including 42 full-time teachers (8 professors, 6 associate professors, 27 lecturers and 1 teaching assistant), 1 paraprofessional school personnel, and 3 administrative staff members. Among them, 8 have got Doctoral degree and 33 Master’s degree.

We have 14 departments, which are Department of Basic Principles of Marxism, Department of Mao Zedong’s Thoughts and the Theory and Practice of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics, Department of Outline of Chinese Modern History, Department of Ideological and Political Education, Department of Situation and Policy, Department of Scientific Socialism, Department of Dialectics of Nature, Department of Health Management, Department of Applied Psychology, Department of Arts, Department of Medical Ethics, Department of Health Economics, Department of Health Law and Department of Military Theory.

We also have a Mental Health Education Center, which is one of the training and research bases for mental health education teachers in Liaoning Province. The center has college student psychological counseling rooms and offices.

We undertake the teaching work of public ideology and political theory, and humanities and social sciences for multiple levels of students in CMU, including undergraduate students (including 7-year program), graduate students, students of applied technology school, adult education school and distance education school, etc. We have offered 13 compulsory (optional) courses, and 25 optional courses of Humanities Quality Education.

In 2008,“Medical Ethics”was selected as the quality course of Liaoning province. "Basic Principles of Marxism", "Moral Education and Law Fundamental" and "College Students’ Mental Health Education" were selected as the quality courses in China Medical University. In September 2005, the Social Science Department, the precursor, was awarded the honorary title of "Quality University Teaching Team of Ideological and Political Theory Course" by Liaoning Provincial College and University Working Committee and Liaoning Provincial Department of Education.

Approved by the Academic Degree Committee of the State Council, we were entitled to confer professional master degree in three academic disciplines, which are "Social Science and Health Management" in October 2000, "Applied Psychology" in October 2004, and "Ethics" in October 2006. The enrollment of the above three disciplines started in the next year of approval. This enhanced the teaching of humanities and social sciences at CMU to a new level.

In the first decade of 21st century, we have won more than 100 provincial and ministerial level scientific research projects, collectively completed and published a series of 7 books “High Quality Innovative Talents”, hosted or co-wrote more than 10 textbooks, and published more than 200 academic papers in the core journals of Humanities and Social Sciences and other kinds of journals.

At present, 2 teachers have been selected “Cross-Century Youth Theory Talent Training Project of Liaoning Province”, and 1 teacher has been selected “Theoretical Talent” of the “Four Batches of Talent Project of Liaoning provincial Party Committee Propaganda Department”. In addition, 2 teachers were awarded “Excellent Moral Workers” of the National Health and Family Planning Commission, 1 teacher was awarded "Excellent Teacher of Ideological and Political Theory Course in Colleges and Universities" of Liaoning Province, and 2 teachers were awarded “Young Backbone Teachers of College Ideological and Political Theory Course ” of Liaoning Province.

In the past 5 years, we have obtained more than 50 scientific research projects, and published 2 monographs and more than 100 papers. In recent years, 12 teachers have won prizes in Young Teachers’ Basic Teaching Skills Competition, including 2 first prizes, 2 second prizes and 3 third prizes of Shenyang city as well as 3 second prizes and 2 third prizes of Liaoning Province.

Under the leadership of the Party Committee of CMU, we will continue to work hard, with education of Marxism theory and humanistic quality as the foundation, discipline construction as the lead, team building as the focus, and talent training as the core. We will adhere to the concepts of innovation, coordination, green, openness and shared development, make endeavor to become CMU’s base of teaching and scientific research of ideological and political theory and humanistic quality education, and make great contributions to the training of qualified medical students.
