The Second Clinical College of China Medical University

The Second Clinical College (Shengjing Hospital) is a large, modern and digitalized hospital. It was founded in 1883, then was called Shengjingshi Hospital, and was established by Dugald Christie, a missionary doctor from Scottish Church. It was the first hospital of western medicine in the Northeast of China.

At present, the Hospital has Nanhu Campus, Huaxiang Campus, Shenbei Campus, Dongdaihe branch hospital and Benxi Base for Medical and Pharmaceutical Research and Education. The total area of the hospital is 970,000 square meters and the building area is 740,000 square meters.

Currently, the Hospital has a total of 6,710 staff. Among them, 5,932 are health professionals, including 499 professors and associate professors or equivalent. There are 137 supervisors for doctoral-degree students, 320 supervisors for master’s degree supervisors. 118 people serves as chair, vice chair or standing committee member of the Chinese Medical Association at the national and provincial levels.

The Hospital has 29 first-level specialties of diagnosis and treatment, 82 second-level specialties, 122 clinical or technical departments (wards) and 4,750 authorized beds. Shengjing Hospital has 3.664 million outpatient and emergency visits, 207,000 discharges of inpatients and over 97,000 surgical operations annually. The average duration of hospital stay is 10.1 days.

Shengjing Hospital is well known nationally and internationally for her excellent medical technology and complete discipline system. The Hospital undertakes many important tasks such as the consultation and emergency treatment of critically ill patients and personnel training in medical technology and hospital management in the region. It provides the public with full range of medical and health services throughout their whole life cycle from the assisted reproductive technology to the hospice care.

Up to now, the Hospital owns 16 national key clinical specialties, over 20 provincial diagnosis and treatment centers and training centers. Shengjing Hospital has now rapidly evolved into a major internationalized urban hospital. Because of the Hospital’s advanced medical technology and complete supportive facilities, Liaoning Provincial Medical Center for Foreign Nationals, the first institution providing medical service for foreign nationals in Liaoning Province, and “Shenyang International Hospital”, the first public international hospital for foreign nationals in Shenyang were set up in the Hospital.

As a national "Model Hospital of Digitalization", Shengjing Hospital has played a leading role in hospital digitalization. Now, all the clinical departments of the hospital use electronic medical records. The Hospital is the only "Dual Seven Level" hospital in China that reached level 7 of EMR System Application Capacity Grading by the Hospital Management Institute of National Health and Family Planning Commission and level 7 (the highest) of EMR Application Evaluation by the American organization HIMSS.

The Hospital has formed the concept of value and management system that all staffs accept and abide by. That includes the core value of being a creator of harmonious environment and a provider of high quality service, an evaluation system of service stars for individuals and working units, a staff-centered internal information management system that takes HR as the axis supplemented by the self feed-back management system, and the distribution system based on performance evaluation (60%), evaluation of humanistic service (20%) and the cost management (20%). This set of operation mechanism is continuously enriched and perfected to make the hospital operation and management move toward the virtuous cycle track with continuous improvement.

The Hospital has established Shengjing Hospital Group of China Medical University and Shengjing Medical Service Alliance which includes 116 hospitals from 10 provinces or regions. In 2011, the Hospital was awarded “National Role Model in Ethical and Cultural Progress.”
