College of Basic Medical Science (CBMS)

College of Basic Medical Science (CBMS), renamed in 1994, was established on the basis of the Division of Basic Medicine founded in 1956. Currently, CBMS consists of 16 departments and 1 experimental teaching center. CBMS is authorized to grant doctorate degrees in disciplines of basic medicine and biology, as well as to provide post-doctoral training opportunities. CBMS now has 1 key laboratory of the Ministry of Education, 1 key laboratory of National Health and Family Planning Commission, 1 key laboratory of Liaoning province, 1 key laboratory of Liaoning Colleges and Universities (Level-A), and 6 key disciplines of Liaoning province, including cell biology, pathology and pathophysiology, medical genetics, biochemistry and molecular biology, human anatomy and histo-embryology, and medical immunology. In 2015, the disciplines of "biology and biochemistry" and "neuroscience and behavior" were ranked as global Top 1% disciplines, according to the latest Essential Science Indicators (ESI).

Presently, CBMS has 316 full-time faculties, including 74 professors and 78 associate professors, among whom there are 60 doctoral supervisors. The college now has 1 National Renowned Teacher, 1 National Outstanding Teacher, 1 member of State Council Academic Degree Committee, 1 Innovation Team of the Ministry of Education, 2 winners of New Century Excellent Talents Supporting Plan of the Ministry of Education, 8 experts receiving State Council Special Allowance, 3 Distinguished Professors of Liaoning province, 2 Climbing Scholars in Liaoning province, 4 chairmen/vice-chairmen of Chinese Medical Association branches, 6 chairmen of Scientific Committee in Liaoning province, and 12 members of "Top 100 talents" of Liaoning Provincial Hundred-Thousand-Ten Thousand Talents Project.

CBMS offers 36 courses for students of seven-year clinical medicine program, five-year clinical medicine program, postgraduate programs and medical program for international students. The college now has 1 national experimental teaching demonstration center and 3 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers. During the period of the Twelfth Five-Year Plan, CBMS obtained 37 teaching projects, among which 2 were at the national level. We carried out 15 national-level continuing education programs; as editor-in-chief, edited 16 national college “12^thFive-Year Plan” textbooks; won 16 provincial-level excellent teaching achievement prizes. Mentored by CBMS teachers, the students have won 5 first-prizes, 10 second-prizes and 9 third-prizes in the National Undergraduates’ Experimental Design Contest and Innovation Forum in Basic Medical Sciences.

CBMS has the Division of Biological Sciences and Biotechnology, which recruits and trains undergraduates specialized in biological science. In addition, there are 390 postgraduate students including 123 doctoral candidates in CBMS. From 2011 to 2015, 6 Ph.D. dissertations and 4 master dissertations were awarded outstanding dissertations in Liaoning province.

From 2011 to 2015, CBMS obtained RMB 61 million yuan funding from both national and provincial foundations to support the discipline construction. CBMS acquired 274 longitudinal research grants with up to 10.5 RMB million yuan in total. Among those research grants, there were 7 sub-projects of the National Basic Research Program of China, 1 key project of National Natural Science Foundation, 123 general projects of National Natural Science Foundation, and 1 RO1 project from National Institutes of Health (NIH), USA. A total of 1,377 academic articles were published, among which 615 papers were indexed by SCI. Numerous articles were published on high-profile peer-review journals such asJournal of Biological Chemistry,Journal of Immunology,Nucleic Acid Research, Autophagy,Oncogene, Cancer Research,Neurobiology of Aging,Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease,Journal of the American Society of Nephrology,Journal of Hypertension,Molecular Therapy,Biomaterials, etc. The achievements of research work in CBMS have won 15 provincial scientific awards, including 1 first-prize, 6 second-prizes and 3 third-prizes. In addition, 4 national patents were approved.

CBMS has established stable collaboration and scholar exchange relationship with more than 20 famous international institutions from the United States, Japan, Britain, Germany, Sweden, Belgium, and etc. From 2011 to 2015, 57 experts were invited to give lectures in CBMS, among whom there were 47 foreign scholars.

CBMS is striving to reach the first-class college among the national institutions in basic medicine field by cultivating talents and recruiting outstanding researchers around the world.
