On Sunday March 25th 2018 from 1:00pm to 6:00 pm the Student Union Study Section hosted its third Basic Medical Assessment (BMA) seminars of the academic year 2017-2018. The seminar was the first of this semester and covered assessment techniques done in the clinical examination of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. It was spearheaded by the IES Student Union President, Debronique Ellis, and the Student Union Study Section members Lebogang Sethole, Joshua Blay, and Alpha Kalonda MUTAMBA. A total of 60 participants were trained in the assessment techniques.
A re-run session was held on the following Saturday March 31st from 3:00pm to 6:00pm and was led by the Study Section Chief Opeyemi Odesanya along with her section members. A total of 25 participants were in attendance.
This month the BMA seminar emphasized clinical concepts of inspection, palpation, percussion and auscultation in the cardiovascular and respiratory context and students got a chance to practice in pairs.
Participants were encouraged by the prizes awarded to them when they could recall and demonstrate the fundamental topic of patient history-taking and SOAP notes that was covered in the very first seminar.
We all had a good time learning clinical skills and putting into practice the knowledge amassed from classroom theory. We are deeply longing to have more opportunities to participate in such seminars and practical events.
The next seminar is scheduled for April 29th with Dr. Lu Xiaoli from the CMU 1st hospital guiding attendees in the process of completing an abdominal examination on a patient. The re-run is scheduled for the following Saturday.
The seminars are indeed growing and we invite every CMU student, international and Chinese alike, to come and join us!
