This event designed, organized and facilitated by the Arts Section surpassed all expectations and was most magical. The event was coined in light of giving those ‘behind the scenes’ art forms an opportunity to be explored. It was most suitable for rappers, poets of all forms, storytellers, playwrights and songwriters, just to name a few talents. It gave artistes of this origin the chance to write, be seen and be heard. With the plethora of scripts that were read, spoken, composed in and for the session the title was proven most fitting.
The session took place in the IES building on the 25th of October, 2017. It commenced at 5 p.m. and hosted a small and intimate audience of mostly poets and a few spectators. The event’s line-up featured an assortment of aesthetic poetic and musical talents ranging from fiery, and heart felt recitations to mellow soft-spoken words, all of which were accompanied by a musical set. One by one, the writers presented, each captivating the on-lookers inducing their emotions according to the words they spoke. After all the listed artistes shared their thrilling pieces, there was an on-spot poem writing challenge, where both presenters and spectators alike had to participate.
Everyone was divided into groups of 3, and given the task to create a poem based on a single word from a preformed phrase, conceptualized by the host, Akili. The phrase said “Let’s love life, yourself, others and the beauty thereof”. Within 20 minutes participants were eager to share their pieces, an example of which can be read below.

It was inspiring to watch the creative processes of the students, who eventually brought forth pieces that each kept the audience at a standstill. Subsequently, the event came to a lovely end as we parted with the tranquilizing, stimulating, refreshing atmosphere, that the poems created. Important themes covered by the poets included, Racism, classism, pride, self-confidence, women’s rights, self-truthfulness, reality, sensitivity, career, culture, and social factors of being a doctor. Members of the IES Student Union Arts Section, Precious,Dhriti, Akshay, Kishore and Ashae, headed by Chief Akili Samuels, worked unflaggingly to ensure the event was successful and entertaining. We look forward to hosting an even better event next time.
