On Sunday October 29th, 2017, the Student Union of the International Education School (IES) Study
section, launched its second year of the “Monthly Basic Medical Assessment Seminars.” These seminars were founded by the current IES union president Debronique Ellis in 2016 with the aim of providing pre-clinical medical students with early exposure to some basic clinical skills. She functioned as the facilitator of the first seminar for this semester which addressed: “History-taking, SOAP notes (medical documentation) & Vital Signs and commenced with the preliminary welcome, introduction and a brief award ceremony for last year’s attendees.

| The successful 3-hour ‘hands-on’ event was supported by over thirty (30) pre-clinical international students from years 1 to 3; all displaying immense enthusiasm, as many of them, for the first time, practiced the doctor-pt. interview (history-taking), writing S.O.A.P notes and assessing each other’s vital signs (blood pressure, respiratory rate, pulse rate and temperature).The session was filled with many live scenarios, re-enactments,hands-on practice and interactive discussions. Participants were separated into four (4) groups and completed their exercises and activities as a ‘medical team’. As the practice sessions came to a close, many students expressed feelings of satisfaction and appreciation for such a “well-needed” event. |

The upcoming seminars will include practical skills used in: Musculoskeletal & Neuromuscular assessment, Cardio-pulmonary assessment, Abdominal assessment, Emergency Response & Diagnostic tests. A single topic will be done in each month until the academic year 2017-18ends. Students who faithfully attend all seminars until its culmination, will receive certificates from the IES student union indicating their participation |
