On October 13, 2018, IES represented CMU in the 2nd Clinical Thinking & Skills Competition of International Medical Students which was held at Dalian Medical University as part of the China Association for International Education’s “Study in China” series. This competition was held at the national level with 30 medical universities participating and 120 medical students coming from 28 countries.

The competition was divided into two rounds, preliminaries and finals. The preliminary round was done in a style of a competition track and included subjects such as internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics with specific procedures such as paracentesis, clothing and disinfection preparation for surgery, artificial preparation of milk for babies, and more.

The final round was modeled after a car accident in which participants served as first aid respondents to the scene and later as the emergency response team in a hospital. All the situations in the competition came from real life clinical scenarios. Participants were asked to closely read the given scenarios and information in order to decide the appropriate choice of treatment; additionally, participants focused on a patient-first mentality as they communicated with the patients to perform the procedures.
The CMU team consisted of Ahmed Abbas Farooqui, Batch 2013; Michael Ming Zy Xu, Batch 2014; Kacharna Varnet Bailey, Batch 2014; and Hajirath Abdul Mapembe, Batch 2014. With just two months of nonstop training as organized by The Affiliated Shengjing Hospital of CMU, CMU’s team walked away with the highest prizes: Excellent Team and Best Teamwork. Additionally, of the 30 individual prizes awarded for every school, CMU also received Excellence in First Aid/Emergency Medicine.

We thank IES and Shengjing Hospital for giving us this opportunity and especially to all the teachers who took time out of their busy schedules to provide training for the participants. It was only through the combined efforts, sacrifices, and hard work of everybody that we were able to emerge victorious from this competition.
IES encourages interested students to continue practicing their basic clinical skills and try out next year to partake in the competition.
